The arts of the fire include enamelled glass and metal, including inlaid enamels, enamelled and other porcelain, and various types of stoneware. Imperial production of enamelled snuff bottles flourished during the eighteenth century, while the nineteenth century saw greater production for the merchant and scholar classes who had become keen snuff-takers as the habit spread from Beijing and the Court to the rest of the nation. This volume documents over 100 snuff bottles transformed in the kiln, along with a small but important collection of other imperial enamelled metal and glass objects produced at the Palace Workshops, again with full descriptions, translations, and notes.
