Glass figured heavily in snuff bottle production, the imperial glassworks having been started by European missionaries in 1796 and supervised by them for some decades thereafter. It was frequently imperial glass bottles that were used as fancy containers for imperial gifts of snuff at banquets and festivities or as prizes to members of the banner armies of the Manchus. This volume contains over 160 snuff bottles and many other vessels from the Franz Collection, together with full details.
